I don't know if Jonathan's dad really died during that time, but that would be quite sad. There's an interview with him in a Disney Adventure magazine and there he also talks about how he accidentally shoutet "Mom!" instead of "Dad!" but he didn't mention that his father actually died. So I don't know if that's really true.
