What do you think of the horror genre?


Personally, it's my favorite. I have some morbid curiosity that kicks in and makes me watch it even if I know it's going to scare me. Most don't, though; there's only been a couple of things that have really kept me up at night.

I know some people don't it like it though, because they get scared easily, or find the stories tasteless, or what-have-you.

...there's only one horror movie I know of, though, that would I truly describe as tasteless.

You can probably even guess what it is.

But anyway! Are you into horror or not? What's the scariest movie you've seen (or game you've played, book you've read, etc)?

I really like horror in general. I don't scare or creep out easily except for things which have proportions which are all wrong. Like grey aliens and Slenderman freak me out a little bit.

I like bloody movies too. Everyone is always so surprised when they learn this about me.

Slenderman didn't scare me at all until I saw Marble Hornets. Now? Ugh. When I'm alone or it's dark, and I see a shadow out of the corner of my eye...


I was terrified of grey aliens when I was a little kid and I never knew why, until I figured out it was the uncanny valley-ness of them, haha.

I like bloody movies as well, but... that doesn't really surprise anyone. Haha.

I don't think I like many horror movies, I just can't feel that scariness and stress when watching one (Though sometimes I pretend to to have fun with friends ). I sometimes like the silliness of some of them, like Bloody Valentine for example, but I get a good laugh instead of scariness from them.
Though I gotta admit that there are some movies which, even without scaring me, have a really good story and dialogue, which is what I enjoy watching most. But some others try so hard to be like that and fail miserably, and one of the most common "scary effects" they use, is suddenly playing a hard note that startles the audience, but what's happening on the screen?... nothing!, it's not a scare for the characters onscreen, it's for the audience alone, and that's what peeves me sometimes

Anyway, I enjoy horror games a lot better, where the survival of the character depends on you, and you feel the stress the character should feel. The GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil was the most successful on having that effect on me it's darn creepy and darn horrifying. The Dead Space games are awesome for that reason too

I love horror . Atleast when it's done right. I've watched so many horror movies over the course of my days that I've become pretty immune to most of the scariness of them. The last time I remember getting legitimate chills was after watching all the 4 Ring-movies (the original ones in Japanese) in a row by myself at night. It's something about the way Japanese people make horror movies that gets me.. The American adaptations were not scary at all compared to those, because they relied on using the same tricks that every other movie out there uses. Since Japan is another culture all together, the horror genre feels different aswell. And thus it's more scary (We fear what we don't know)
Also I remember some Edgar Allan Poe poems being pretty creepy in that omenous sort of way.

So yeah, I like horror, but it's getting increasingly difficult to find anything that actually scares me..

I can't even play the Doom video game, even the old ones, because all the noises of things as you play... I HATE that. Yeah, I don't do horror/scary stuff. I think my imagination is too good or something

I don't like horror movies, but only because most of them freak the hell out of me and therefore I am unable to sleep for days. They certainly succeed in scaring me, so I just avoid them altogether, which sounds kind of odd, I know, because that's what horror movies are supposed to do. I just can't be doing with sleep deprivation because of them. I think it's because I somewhat believe in ghosts. I know that doesn't help.

The only horror movies I can really watch without being scared are the parody ones, like Scary Movie. I watched Scream too before that actually, and I wasn't scared. I haven't really watched many horror movies, but for me that one was more comical because of the mask.

I haven't read any horror books at least for a long while, but I've played a few scary games in the past now, even if I can't stand them... ironic or what? I found Dino Crisis to be quite scary (I've heard that it's similar to Resident Evil, but not as scary... and with dinosaurs. ) I remember I couldn't even be dragged on some scary rides because of my fear for horror.

But hey, I can watch Michael Jackson's Thriller without being scared.

Firstly, I think I am the only person in history to have been scared by Scream Yes, that's how bad I am The actual movie wasn't too bad, but it was when I had to walk down our dark hallway afterwards to go to bed etc. I struggled with that for at least a week

Hey, I have a plenty good imagination...

Scream was stupid to me because where I went to elementary school, every Halloween, at least half of all the boys wore Scream masks. I don't even know why.
I saw the Blair Witch Project when I was a wee lad and I didn't think it was scary. Same with the Sixth Sense...

I think I'm actually more liable to be scared of things now than I was then... xD
But probably the stupidest horror movie I ever saw was "The Unborn". It's like they took everything "scary" (ancient curses! possession small children! jump scares! and NAZIS!) and threw it into one crappy movie. Ugh.

Paranormal Activity scared me because... well. I don't actually know why, initially. But I went home after that movie, and... if you've seen the movie, remember the part where he goes into the attic and finds that picture? Yeah. The entrance to my attic is in my closet. When I was trying to sleep, there was a banging sound in my closet, and I thought I heard a distant rumble...
I did not sleep well that night.

I think part of the reason Marble Hornets affected me so much is because I saw it at a time when I've been rethinking a lot of things, & it's hard to describe, but it sort of tied into that.
Also, I've ALWAYS had a fear of looking out my window and seeing someone (or someTHING) there, so that didn't help. D:

I am so, so behind on games! What is Dead Space about? I keep mixing it up with FEAR for some reason.

Horror, when it's done properly, can be really effective. I do enjoy a good horror film but sadly very little actually scares me these days, I think I've just desensitised myself it it now, lol! I think the last film to properly scare me was when I saw Alien when I was about 10, and that's still one of my favourite films (as a side note, if you've not seen the blu-ray of Alien, do so, it looks amazing, almost like a brand new film, easily the second best blu-ray I've seen after The Dark Knight, not bad for a 30 year old film) I've not really been scared by a film since.

On the other hand, I played the first Silent Hill game, scared the ever living frak out of me and I've not played it since, Aside from that though games don't really bother me that much either.

What I don't really like is the so called "torture porn" films, like Saw. To me this isn't horror, there's nothing really scary about them, just lots of gore, now don't get me wrong I don't mind gore (see: Alien) but I've never been able to get into films like that.

I love horror, and splatter movies so to speak, but the later part is kind of varied, if its done right its " holy god wow..."
but most of the times its " I CALLED THAT SHE LOST HER SHOE LOL!

however Horror to me that really gets to me is the psycolagical horror, ya know the ring, the forth "something" , things that get to your head or is just so horrebul that ewww..."situation wise not effects" i remember this one movie where people where in amazon and basicly trapped on a temple, and the plant there was well eating them.

thats a part of real horror to me, the situation your in, murders and rapist and blah blarh is so done, but a horror thats not human/monster right down is scary for me

though as a gamer, i can say, Silent hill. iv played every single Silent hill game there is out there "even the arcades" and im a huge Silent hill fan. though the experience have varried, Silent hill 3, is the scariest one for me, playing it today il still crap my pants.

though nothing NOTHING scares me as much as Amnesia the dark decent, not a single million billion over the top company like EA and Dead space, comes even CLOSE! to scare me so much as Amnesia did...that game was the only game that i 21 year old horror gore loving fan, would say " F(#"! this!, im quitting now and putting on all the lights in the house!".

im somewhat of an horror expert actually when i think about it, you know as far as how to build up a horror game/movie,

cuse no "horror" games scare me today as Silent hill..or those psychological flicks, Resident evil a fan of that series too but that hardly scares me thats just "horror action" witch is not horror at all

but yeah Silent hill, though the experince has been varied throwout the series, no Silent hill game has been right down "BAD" not even the last one, sure it was the worst of the bunch, but it still deliverd a nice (not so scary) experience, with an AWSOME story to go along with it, the setting is just so very silent hill.

Silent hill have lots of stuff i like, its horror thats somewhat un-known, it has ALOT of symbolism (witch i really love) and its pretty much the only Survival horror game out there today. but the history, story and just general Lore of Silent hill is fantastic!.

the movie sucked .......it didnt follow the Lore of the Silent hill at all...it was just a fan service movie...and as a fan i enjoyed it YES. but i hate it too sense it dont stay to the source matrial for example.

The main charecter is supose to be a father not a mother, and Pyramid head is not supose to be in that movie at all...

but love the series and i recomend all to play em for a good scare or atleast mood hehe

and for those who loved the movie " shame on you!" there making a Silent hill 2 movie right now, based on the third game YES (no D right now, so gona be intressting to see how they destro-i mean interpretative that game

OH and the absulute best with Silent hill "related to symbolism" is that the monsters that appear, is an incargnation twisted version of your own memories/experiences/pain/suffering/self loathing/happynes/ego/ "etc etc etc"
simply everything that is you, just twisted horribly in a negative way. example.

Silent Hill is amazing. Personally, the second one is my favorite (with James). I agree with you, the symbolic aspect of the monsters is a large part of the appeal, and that's one of the things I wish they had kept in the movie. In the movie it was more like "ah! Scary things!" Really, the only thing I liked about the movie was the effects; it definitely looked like Silent Hill.

I haven't played Amnesia yet (it won't install on my computer ), but I'm dying to! It looks so cool. It's really Lovecraftian.

I really can't stand scary movies.... Unless if you want to count the Sweeny Todd film with Johnny Depp since that had gore in it.... Although, the blood looked REALLY fake (after all, it's a musical)! Believe me, if I were to see a horror film, I probably wouldn't be able to sleep for a week; I'm SUCH a scaredy-cat! xD

Most of the killers in those films are awfully creepy, though. Especially Jigsaw (or even that dang puppet), Freddy Kruger, and Leatherface. Especially Leatherface.... What a psycho! o.O

Anyways, me + horror films= BIG no no.

Actually, the closest I've watched a scary film was when I saw the Grudge 2 trailer in theatres.... I had my head turned away from the screen the whole time, and everytime a loud noise popped up, I would always go: .

I like traditional tongue-in-cheek horror..most of this new stuff is the same old gore slideshow with a storyline tacked on as an afterthought *cough* Hostel *cough* I mean look at The Human Centipede...the "storyline" is just a wrapper for a disturbing surgery showcase. Give me an old dracula movie any day

I like Hostel... I didn't find it scary, but it was entertaining. Couldn't get through the sequel though...

The Human Centipede is the tasteless movie I described in the first post. I just... what...

The Jigsaw puppet does creep me out a little. Leatherface used to creep me out, too, until I saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. He's... a bit hard to take seriously after that.
