www.blender3D.org - a very very good open-source 3D app.
As for practice, almost all have a very significant learning curve (with the exception of SolidThinking's modeling tool, which owns all); once you learn to use the tools efficiently, it's actually seems more natural than drawing on paper. You can only imrove with practice, of course, but the more you practice the better you'll get.

Yup, it's pntbll248, but I just started posting on it (after a 6 month break) two days ago... so there's really nothing there that ya haven't seen
Which reminds me, I just got a new art program and tried it out. Still have so much to learn, but it's by far the most interesting program (besides Maya) that I've ever had.
