What is it that has no weight, can be seen by the naked eye and if you put it in the barrol it'll make the barrol lighter?

Two gryphons [gryphon is the thing in my avy] are walking through the woods and stumble about another in a clearing. One gryphon looks to his companion and asks, "who is that?" His companion then replies,

I'll add one of my favorite brain teasers.

A man was driving down the road in a black car with. As he was driving, a completly black furred dog ran into the street. This road had no houses or street lights. The car's headlights and internal light were off. There were no stars or moon out. Yet, the man was able to see the dog and stop with plenty of time to spare. How?

Edit: Sorry, Sam, but I screwed it up, like I alwasy do. re-read, and try again. Good guess though.
