Wow, very, VERY nice! I love the pose and the angle, it's awesome. You're style is very unique, I love it. Great job on this one, though the near hand looks just a little too large. I know it's perspective and stuff but still... otherwise, great stuff.

I think it speaks for itself, though it doesn't have much to say, probably one of my weirdest. It's a tripod with an attitude (there's some fowl language, so children beware).

Totally sick landscaping, Pnt.

New image showing some revisions to my mech design, including adjustments to color, reflectivity, and additions to the model itself. Additionally, I've added in a short bit of script that rotates the body an amount determined by the average rotation of the feet. It reduces the number of elements I must adjust manually during animation.

We both use Maya, but you could use virtually any 3D application. It's a bit expensive if you want a legit copy (I always try to get legit copies), but their student discount program takes something like 90% off the original price. I also use Vue for landscapes.

Are there any sites that would have any good, but easy to understand tutorials? I wouldn't mind giving it another try too, those renders you and bahati make a freakin' sweet.

Bahati
February 17th, 2006, 05:55 AM
I've never found one specific site that carries all the necessary tutorials.

Maya itself comes with its own share of walkthroughs and they proved immensely helpful when I first started out. Since then, my typical strategy has been to Google a few key terms in the process I'm trying to perform and see what comes up.

Of course, nothing is a total substitute for trial and error, the most fitting characterization of my Maya learning style.

EDIT: And that cello image is fantastic. That shading style rubs me the right way.

It feels a bit cluttered to me.

First of all, I'm in love with that pic; as bahati said, it's a great shading style.

As for tutorials, I have one here in The Mirage and there's tons on the internet. So far, the best free tutorial resource I've seen is www.highend3d.com. If you're willing to pay some cash for some quick and useful knowledge, www.digitaltutors.com offers tons of DVDs on Maya with focus on different areas (I recommend Advanced Shading Networks to anyone using Maya, the information is priceless. I just got photorealistic car modeling as well, it's a huge DVD set, but very informative). Gnomon workshop also offers some great DVDs, though some can be much more difficult to pick up quickly.

Googling for tutorials is also a great way to find more obscure ones.

If you want some advice about starting with Maya, don't get too far into modeling before you start some serious training in rendering/texturing/shading networks. Rendering is what brings an image together, it can make poor models look professional, but if not used correctly, even professional models can look poor.

"I sit in the back of the store in my tiny bowl. The other fish swim and play in their massive boxes of water; I float idle in my glass bubble. Sometimes I'll suddenly twist around; for a brief moment feel the water rush over my fins and pretend I am swimming. The other fish, they come and go, bought by the occasional person in need of a companion. Usually it's the colorful ones, or those angel fish.

I saw a fly yesterday, he kept me company for some time I suppose, though I doubt he had much interest in me. Maybe he'll be back. I hope so, I get so lonely in my tiny ocean.

But when I feel frightened or alone, I remember that out there, somewhere, there's someone needing a friend, and I'll be ready."

@KTL: Thanks! :D Means a lot that you're always so supportive with my work :)

@Bahati: Thanks man :D The biggest problem I've had with the Ultrapanivision aspect ratio is that it's not a standard frame dimension, so it's been hell getting a frame for a print :p

And now for a wallpaper. It actually looks pretty good if you have a 1280*1024 screen :)

Looking great, pnt. Very detailed. ^^

Well, I just finished this one...and I guess for those who actually know the scene from Monkey Island, it's twice as fun but I'll post it anyways:
Guybrush and Elaine:

The sketch for this was drawn in school, so no reference again...oh and the subjects was maths btw :p

Wow Ryan you've really outdone yourself on those render's, The water in the glass is almost perfectly abstracted so you can see it being rustled and shaken, like that of a real life scenario if you were to get that far into it. It's just awesome, as for the Jellyfish.. They are just Eyeballingly amazing, I mean.. its just wow.. I could honestly say I could stare at that for a few hours amazed at it. Great Job Ryan.. Very good job *hugs* :)

Neola - Nicely done for something without Reference, however.. Never seen where that's from so I'm not quite sure if I get it's full meaning right about now ;)

Great job Bahati! :D The lense flares and object distibution make it look like you're using Vue, is that correct? If you are, I have a tutorial for it. I love the light usage in both scenes :)

Wow, thanks Chris! :D Very much appreciated, as always. Thanks LC! It's always so awesome that you take time to comment on my work :hugs:

Bahati- That's gorgeous artwork! Say, how long does it approximately take to make one?

Thanks for your comments on my comic, guys^^
As for the dress...well, Guybrush (the guy in the dress) wants that map piece from Elaine (the gal obviously). But since she's having a costume party atm, he won't get inside her mansion without a costume...well and that dress was the only one left =P

I'm not quite sure to make of that, Monai. Looks nice, though. Sneak that into an art gallery and no one would know the difference.

I toyed about 15 minutes tonight with a tutorial by professional artist Greg Martin on creating planets in Adobe Photoshop. I'm pleased with my first attempt.

Another mock advertisement. This time it's an autococker paintball gun with the fictional name "Pug". I'll be doing a few more images with this model :)

I'm very happy with how the modeling and rendering (especially the render time) came out. Modeled in Maya and rendered in mental ray (<1 minute render time). I didn't use any lights in the scene; I used reflections tweaked with a few other material settings.

Bahati
August 25th, 2006, 06:40 AM
Looks pretty slick, Pnt. My sole bit of constructive criticism concerns the squares spread around the edges of the picture; their angularity seems to clash with the curves of the gun, font, and logo (which looks familiar, but I can't remember from where).

The parts of the model closer to the camera seem blurred. Was that something you did post-render or a process within Maya?

A few weeks back you mentioned that you have a tutorial for Vue. If that statement's still true, would you please link me to it or host it somewhere?

Yeah, I'm redoing the picture, I kinda feel sick looking back on it :p As for the logo, I use that logo on a lot of my compositions, maybe that's where you saw it? (It's just a vector rendered 3D model). The blurriness comes from the mental ray lense_physical_dof node :)

When I get the photos...they're so warped as it is...so I'm, prett much required to do extensive work on them. It's hard to find good tiger pictures these days. I made two more layouts for my page on Horseland. One for me, and then one for a partner account.

Thanks, but seriously, my stuff ain't that good...I mean, look at your pictures!
Btw, that's a beautiful picture you drew there, you're so good at drawing with real media. You should really print a t-shirt with that on, if you haven't already planned to do that already.

As for my "coloring technique" (not sure if you can call it one)...it's pretty easy. I scanned in my sketch without outlining it, removed all the white in photoshop and colored on a separate layer below the actual sketch. That way, you don't even have to shade much anymore X)

And yeah, I guess you could make a request...I need something to get my mind off other things anyway = )
