Okay. Here's the problem: my parents are as paranoid as Simba in Simba's Pride. They're about to install parental controls on my computer, which surprises me because I've had it for almost a year now and they haven't gotten around to it.

Now, I can probably get around to figuring out how to disable the program, or just crack the password or something, but until then I may have to lower the amount of time I spend on MSN & AIM, just to protect my own privacy as well as that of my friends.

So, for now, I bid you good times. I'll probably be back soon. =)

:grrr: I can't stand parental control things, I had one on my pc for fun just to see what would happen and it wouldn't let me join Lea :o, well if you can let me know the name of the program I will see what I can do to help you delete your history on it for your privacy ;)

 haha. *looks around* why am i the only one laughing like i have something to hide? XD

anyway. i think i've got it sorted. there's a little button that lets you sign out of it... and that's kind of really dumb, but there's a popup window that appears when you're not signed in...

*moves it out of the way*

Edit: it seems that it blocks port 80 while it's not logged in. i can use AIM & MSN, but not Firefox or IE... >_<

Get a keylogger for your comp and hack their password... :p
Careful while dowloading keyloggers though, they may contain keyloggers themselves. ;)

actually, i've figured out that it's not possible to do that because i'd have to have direct access to their computer. the version installed on my computer is a client. the one on theirs is a server. so i'm screwed unless they go out for a couple hours and i have some time to crack.

or i could always do some phishing. have them register at a fake intranet website to gather their passwords. :hmm:

then again, they can probably read exactly what i'm writing right now because their dumb thing probably has a keylogger built in.

i'm gonna try disabling the network next...

Edit: okay, i guess they're not as stupid as i take them for. time to bust out with my l33t hacking tools. ctrl-alt-delete, processes tab, *kills process*

w00t! it worked!

Parental controls ruin all your fun, what the hell did they think you were gonna use it for when you got it, homework? :p

jk

But really, just tell them it's your computer and you're old enough to be trusted to handle yourself responsibly on the computer. Hit them with the "If you keep spying on everything I do and shield me from the world, how am I ever going to become an independent and functioning adult in society?" question. That seems to work most of the time. :p

My Computer is mine. I bought everything myself about 4 years ago so no one put any parenting controls on mine. No one really uses it anyways except for me. When I can move out, I already have two TVs, a bed/couch , my computer, a radio, a few shelves and dressers that I bought myself. Plus people are going to give me things like dishes, so I'll be set.:cheese:

Cool that you managed to avoid the parental control.

Which brings me to this question...

My mum hates me downloading stuff. She always acts as if I've been downloading viruses, when I've just been downloading stuff like AIM, YIM and WP. (She made me delete all of them.) So my question is, what should I do?

Darkslash
February 27th, 2005, 04:34 PM
Ask her why she thinks that you would knowingly download viruses, since you (I'm assuming) use the computer more than she does, and you would stand to lose more if you had a virus...

Aurelian
February 27th, 2005, 05:18 PM
Monai, Your mother is apparently not very computer illiterate. Once you download a virus, simple deleting does nothing. Explain to her that her demands acomplish nothing. You can also try downloading stuff when she's not around. Unless she spends alot of time on the computer, I doubt she would ever notice.

Besides, AIM, MSN, and YM are downloaded from the safest parts of the web. I'm sure you have family or close freinds with this stuff on there machines. Have then confirm the safty factor for you.

I am the computer administrator for my computer. My mother didn't know how to use MS Word withot my help.

Monai
February 27th, 2005, 09:05 PM
I reinstalled WP. I don't even know how my mum finds out about this stuff, since she's hardly ever on the comp.

lion_roog
February 27th, 2005, 10:33 PM
You can't catch a virus from downloading those applications usually.....but I'm not sure about the risks of possible back-door attacks using the ports those applications occupy.

Monai
February 27th, 2005, 10:36 PM
I know. My mum's always like, "Stop downloading all this crap onto the computer!", and she doesn't even know what it is.

Hope to see you back soon Prince Simba, hope you can sort the computer stuff out. :alone:

My dad was the computer guy, he always set up everything but now that my parents are divorced my bro is the one that sort of manages things, he's not an expert on computers but he knows enough and I know enouugh, and the computer still works so it must be all good. :D :cheese: I don't think we've ever had anything on our computer blocking us so it's ok, my mum hardly uses the computer but she does know how to use it, she takes a little while to do things but she gets them done. hehe, anyway...

I have parental controls. Your parents just want to keep yo from seeing things that are EXTREMELY innapropriate. I got cheesed off about having parental controls @ first but then I realized "It's for my own good.

So parental controls are good.

You will have the same realization I had when I was 12.

:D if you find out their password you can turn it off and they won't know be cause it won't tell them, when it was disabled, cause it actually turns off after a period of time and needs reset:cheese:

Ahh, yes, parental controls. Fond memories. A very, very long time ago, my parents attempted to regulate the amount of time I could spend using the computer with a software package that took advantage of security tools within Windows and could not be uninstalled or have its running process terminated. As soon as I learned that my time was to be limited, I began planning my counterattack.

Problem: The initial configuration of the software limited my use to windows of time between hour x and hour y during the day.
Solution: I advanced the system clock through BIOS to times when my account would unlock.

Problem: My father passworded the BIOS. I could no longer advance the system clock.
Solution: My account still had administrator privileges on the system. I downloaded and installed Proactive Windows Security Explorer, an application that decrypts account passwords on local and remote computers. I ran a "brute force" hack on my parents' administrator account and attained the password within seven minutes. Rather than change settings to the parental controls and leave obvious evidence of what I had done, I simply used my parents' account while on my computer.

Somewhere along the line, the parental controls were changed to allow x number of hours of use in a week. I forget exactly when the change occurred.

Problem: A trip to my father's computer for unrelated reasons yielded unexpected results. Upon opening Google and beginning to type in my search terms, the auto complete window appeared with a list of similar previous searches, one in particular catching my eye. My father had been looking up information on a subfolder within the Windows install directory that stores caches for starting up programs. My curiosity turned to concern as I realized that my father could determine exactly when I was using certain applications by looking at the "Modified" time for the cache files.
Solution: I began manually clearing out the cache directory every time I got off my computer.

Problem: I was eventually discovered. My account was stripped of its administrator privileges and the password on the parent account was changed. I could no longer install, uninstall, or even run programs that were not expressly permitted by the controls.
Solution: On a hunch, I went to the BIOS and entered the same password that was first used on the parent account. Sure enough, the BIOS unlocked and I immediately changed the password to something only I would know. My foot was now firmly in the door.

Problem: I still had no way to run cracking software on my own computer.
Solution: I turned to a very old, unused computer we had lying around. The cracking software was installed on this re-discovered computer and I investigated how to crack passwords on a separate computer. As I learned, there are two files within the Windows directory that store all password information for the computer called SAM and SYSTEM. Both are necessary to decrypt the passwords. To retrieve them, I grabbed two floppy disks and formatted one as an MS-DOS startup disk and emptied the other of its contents except for a command line archiver. I took the disks to my computer and booted the system with the startup disk. When the command line appeared, I swapped in the archiver disk and located the SAM and SYSTEM files on my computer. Both were compressed into an archive on the floppy disk and I returned to my "base of operations" at the old computer. I started up the cracking software, pointed it to the extracted files I had attained, and ran a brute force crack attack as I had done before. Within hours, the password was mine.

Tensions continued for a while longer until my parents and I eventually reached an agreement that they would no longer interfere with my computer use as long as my academics remained strong, something which had never proven a problem. There were no power struggles after that.

Umm I remember a program I downloaded to piss my parents off.. They Put a parental lock on my computer with some program, and it hid itself from the Task Manager so i couldnt end the process So I downloaded some kind of Keylogger onto my computer.. hold on i'll figure out what it was.. Oh well nvm I deleted it off the comp, but it was useful, the program my mom used you would have to put in a pass, and to put the pass it you would hit ctr + P and it would start up when you put it in, I set the key logger on, went to school, and found out my mom put in the pass, I used it, put in the pass for the program lol and disabled it, found out the name and deleted it from comp, My mom went on the next day and found out it was gone, tried to put another one on it and i got a program called.. Umm Zone Alarm, and put it so you can't download ANYTHING from the internet, she got so mad at me, all i said when i got home was, "Owned Please!" Lol it was so hilarious, Shes not that bright when it comes to computers. :P
