Hi everyone! Because I'm in the process of moving, and I'm bound to forget about this if I don't do it now, I'm getting a head start on this years art Secret Santa.

HOW IT WORKS:
1. Post below before September 30th with which character you would like drawn for you (along with good reference images). You can post multiple characters for the artist to choose from.
2. PM me your e-mail address, they will be submitted to the Secret Santa website which then randomly selects who will draw for who.
3. Draw a picture for the person that was selected for you.
4. Post it online in this thread between Dec 20-26th

RULES:
1. Join by September 30th to take part
2. You must draw at least one full-body character with a background element (tree or prop etc) or full background for your Secret Santa
3. Failure to submit a drawing by deadline (Dec 26th) may result in a ban for next year's SS.
4. If you know you are not going to make the deadline, let me know as soon as possible so that another artist can be arranged to complete the picture.
5. Have fun!

Hint: I'd be super happy if you drew Girl... ^^ But it's not a requirement. If you'd prefer to draw a feline, by all means, do!

And you already have my e-mail, Azzy :)

Oooh, me! :D

You can draw any of these characters:

Katai: http://kingsimba.deviantart.com/art/Katai-Character-Sheet-2012-337006257
Namabi: http://kingsimba.deviantart.com/art/Namabi-Character-Sheet-2012-334248177
Jaini: http://kingsimba.deviantart.com/art/Meet-Jaini-402503609
Funsani: http://kingsimba.deviantart.com/art/Meet-Funsani-403043292

I've decided to give a bit of a choice this year, rather than just stick to one character. ;)

Leorgathar
August 16th, 2014, 05:24 PM
I'm definitely in! :D But it seems I'll have to do some new reference images for my characters, since I recently redesigned Coatl, and I don't really have colour references :p I'll have them done soon. For the time being, this is what I have:

Coatl: http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2014/225/8/7/8775ca7fba1e7bb307ab5df0715b159f-d7v0byd.jpg
Cuauhtzin: http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/286/7/1/cuauhtzin_by_leorgathar-d4fuhem.jpg

I have a couple more characters I'd like to include, but I haven't drawn them yet, so those references are coming too

Sharifu
August 16th, 2014, 07:40 PM
Why do we have to have at least two characters? Honestly I only have one. There is Sadiki, but he's not really my character. I don't mind if he is in included in the picture, but if someone only wants to draw one character for me, I would rather it be Sharifu. I would like to join if this is ok.

Azerane
August 16th, 2014, 10:18 PM
That should be fine Sharifu, I don't think anybody will have a problem with it, to be honest I was more thinking if someone had a crazy detailed character, or chose only a monkey character or something, which pretty much none of us would have had any experience trying to draw. I could change it to at least one big cat character?

Edit: Although I realise that still doesn't work, because CGW's character is a hyena and I'm not sure she has another either. Well, scrap that rule then  I was just trying to make sure people had enough options if a person only gave one character but the person drawing was uncomfortable with it :p

Sharifu
August 17th, 2014, 12:43 AM
Well now I see what you were trying to do there...

I am ok with trying to draw an animal other then a big cat, in fact I feel I have more fun drawing something other then big cats because that's mostly what I have been drawing for the past 10 years, and honestly it's so nice to draw something different sometimes. :p

Drat, the full body and/or background element is a deal-breaker for me.
As much as I'd love to participate, I think my chronic art block would make it too difficult to meet the requirements and thus would result in too much stress...and these things are supposed to be fun, no?

I miss the days of sketch trades.
Eh well, maybe next time.

My guess is that the new rules are there to make it a little more fair for everyone. (They're getting quite similar to Timitu's Lilymud Secret Santa now, actually :P) With full body drawings + backgrounds being a requirement, you'll know what you get, so to speak. I've been disappointed in the past when I've poured my heart and soul into a full colour piece for a Secret Santa only to receive an unshaded headshot drawing in return, so I reckon that rule is there to prevent that kind of thing from happening, which I think is a good thing :)

I understand completely where you're coming from...
...and while I understand how it could be perceived as being a lesser quality/effort work, I also feel it's a little unfair to assume that just because someone did not draw a full-bodied and/or shaded piece, that somehow means that they did not put just as much heart and soul into it. Unfortunately, unless you're looking over that artist's shoulder and/or can somehow hack into their creative process, there's no way to know or measure that kind of thing...so the best you can go on is visual results.

Of course, there have been times when I've spent days working on a piece for someone, and then all I get is a stick figure in return, so I get where you're coming from.
No, seriously...someone once submitted a stick figure to a Secret Santa.
At the time, it annoyed me. Now, it makes me laugh.

Actually, now that I re-read the Secret Santa rules, in theory a stick figure could be submitted and still meet the requirements.
It really is all about perception, I suppose.
:thinks:

But, I have babbled long enough, nor do I wish to cause a fuss or lead this thread off-topic.
I'll just wait for another Secret Santa that is better suited for my overly capricious Muses.
:)

Of course. I realise I cut my post a little short, haha. Of course I don't think that how much of the character you see in a drawing automatically measures the amount of effort put in. Absolutely not.

Buut, back on the subject, I think guidelines on how to draw for the art exchange you're taking part in are good, because you know what's expected of you and you know what you'll get in return. I find that quite reassuring, personally :3

Also, a question for Azzy, are we allowed to add more characters to our "wishlists" after we've signed up? I have one that I want to add, but he doesn't have a reference image yet xD

Sharifu
August 17th, 2014, 09:28 PM
I understand where Dare is coming from though. Although it doesn't say in the rules the characters have to be shaded, or the backgrounds have to be super detailed. I guess at least with one background prop like Azerane stated? I'm not trying to get away with doing something so super simple. It's just I don't think I can make a really good looking background. But I'll try.

Azerane
August 18th, 2014, 05:29 AM
I didn't mean to exclude people or become a rule tyrant :( I was only trying to lay a basis for essentially a fair trade, as I've seen it before too on the lilymud one I think, people that simply submit a sketch or something while everyone else has a full colour piece. I didn't want anyone missing out.

And it doesn't have to be detailed, just make it so there's something there, whether it be a snowman, or a christmas tree, or cool shaded colours etc. I'm not asking for a landscape, just a background element.

I don't know what to do anymore...

Kanu, by all means add more characters, as long as there's a reference up before we draw names.

I think it's ok Azerane, I don't think the rules are too unreasonable... I think I need to make some new reference drawings for Sharifu and Sadiki. All of mine are just so old...

Oh no no no! I'm terribly sorry... I didn't mean to imply that you were being a rule tyrant or anything, and I do believe that striving for fair trades is a noble and honest goal.
:ayecapn:

The only reason full bodies and/or background elements are a deal-breaker for me is is because I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to draw them or finish the piece as it was meant to be finished.
When headshots are an option, I can at least guarantee that I'd be able to produce something.
I don't know how to explain it, but more often than not I'll get 80% done with a piece and then I'll suddenly become so demoralized and/or unmotivated that the only way I can "finish" it is by whittling it down to one part of the overall picture... usually, this point would be the the head, (HAHA DECAPITATION!).

It's not that I don't want to produce a full-body piece or am not willing to put forth the effort. It's that I, for whatever reason, generally can't. 'Tis why I no longer take requests or do official trades and/or commissions - those generally come with a lot of rules and expectations (whereas Secret Santas usually don't, and thus are more welcoming to me). In the end, it absolutely kills me to promise something to someone, and then be unable to deliver.

But enough whining. My apologies.

Honestly though, it's your Secret Santa so you are free to dictate whichever rules you wish. Trying to make everyone happy is an impossibility - don't worry about curmudgeons like me.
I'm sorry I said anything. Next time, I'll keep my trap shut.
;)

Thank you for explaining more Dare :) I don't think you should keep your trap shut though, it's important to voice your opinion :p

Maybe I could organise a New Year sketch SS as well or something. I know we didn't have a middle of year or Easter one this year like we have had previously. Seems if I don't organise them nobody does :p

Any more takers? ;)

KanuTGL

Here are the character sheets of Kyseart and Nirani. If it's okay,I would like to add 1-2 more characters in the list, also for the sake of offering more choices to the other participants.I will be working on their character sheets shortly and I plan to have them complete before the 30th of September.Otherwise,it'll be just Nirani and Kyseart.:(

Even though I will probably regret it, I'm skipping it this year. I'm a slow draw-er and the meet-up at Disney is taking up all my mind space from now until November, if I only started drawing in December it just wouldn't be fair to whoever gets it, lol.

Ack, ok. I do want to join but I was waiting until I made some new reference sheets for Sharifu and Sadiki. But I don't think I will have the time to do that before the joining deadline.

I will just use this reference for now. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/birdygirl85/SadikiSharfu_zpsde159044.png
If you want to draw one character, please draw Sharifu the lioness. If you like, you can include her mate, Sadiki.

Petteri is thinking of possibly changing Sadiki's colors, so I hope to update this soon with new pictures. I will hopefully get around to this on one of my next days off from work.

Okay! Then I shall begin this years Secret Santa present giving!

I had Leorgathar and I chose to draw Coatl!

I tried to go for a realistic style and background, so that's why there are leaf shadows on his back.

I hope you like it!

Merry Christmas to you and to all!

Whoa! Thank you SO much, lionobsession! :D he looks pretty cool in that style, and the leaf shadows on him was a nice touch ^^ Thanks again, and Merry Christmas to you too :)

I have yet to finish mine, but I'm pretty sure I'll have it ready on time ^^

Azerane
December 23rd, 2014, 08:42 AM
That looks awesome! The shadow effect is amazing! :cheese:

Ok, me next :D I'm actually surprised that I finished on time, given that I started late, and then had troubles with my hand since it's been so long since I've done any art. As a side note of personal frustration, I sketched the character before looking at the references again, then after looking at the refs realised that the pose in one was almost identical, but I loved the sketch so much that I couldn't bring myself to not use it, so I apologise in advance that it's a little similar.

Without further rambling, I got Kanu and decided to draw her German Shepherd character, Girl. Much fun :) First traditional piece I've done in a very long time too. I'm frustrated that the scan brings out no detail in the whites (because yes I did shade those too) but what can you do. Merry Christmas and I hope you like it :hugs:

Wow,beautiful picture LO!I like the mystic feeling of the jungle that the whole picture has. Also, amazing job on Kanu's character,Azerane! It does seem indeed that the scan deprives the picture of the vibrance and detail that it should have in real life...It hapens to me too and even when I try to adjust the picture it ends up looking even worse >_<

Soooo...my Secret Santa was King Simba. It was very hard to decide which one to draw, because I find all the designs really pretty, especially Namabi and Jaini,so I drew three of them(Namabi,Jaini and Katai).:P

It was lots of fun to draw,I hope you can like it!A very merry Christmas to you and to everyone else as well!:D

Wow, thanks Kossu! All three of my favourite characters together. :D They all look so great. I like the use of colours you used too. Thank you very much and have a very Merry Christmas! :)

I had... *drum roll* Azerane! I decided to draw Razzle and Bandit in the end. Hope you like it, and Merry Christmas to you. :)

Not sure if I like how this one turned out. I was going through a bit of an art block... :headache:

Whoa! Everyone's drawings are amazing! I really like how this Secret Santa is shaping up ^^ I'll comment on each and every drawing on DeviantArt or TLKFAA ;)

Aw for my drawing... ugh, I don't have good news, I'm afraid. I'm almost done with it, I only have to shade it and it'll be ready, I was going to do that today actually, but I turned my laptop on this morning and now the screen doesn't work :ohno: I think it has a bad contact somewhere, but I couldn't fix it. I haven't uploaded the drawing file anywhere else, and I can't have it fixed these days because businesses will be closed for holidays ><

I don't like being late in a Secret Santa, but if I don't get it fixed soon that will have to be the case :( I'm sorry in advance. I'll work on it as soon as I have my laptop working again

That's awesome KS, Bandit is so cute :D I just love it! Thank you :)

Kossu, amazing pic, all the characters look great.

I don't believe you Leor :p Don't fret though, I don't think any of us are going to hate you because of computer trouble.

Fweeee <3 Girl looks really wonderful, Azzy - thank you so much :hugs: I don't mind that the pose is similar to one of my own drawings of her, hehe, it looks great anyway ^^

Everyone else's drawings are so pretty too! I love checking this thread <3

My drawing is for... Kossu! And I drew your character named... Kossu :p I had a blast working on it and I hope you like it! :) (Apologies if the colours look a little too funky. I'm messing around on an unfamiliar monitor, so if I see that it looks really strange once I switch back to my normal setup I'll fix it for you xD)

Wow Kanu, that drawing of Kossu looks so gorgeous :wow: I like the snow and lighting effects especially. I too love checking this thread, everyone is doing such a great work ^^

I don't believe you Leor :p Don't fret though, I don't think any of us are going to hate you because of computer trouble.

Well, I'll leave that to your own interpretation :p But I'm using an iPad at the moment, so there's that
There's actually a way I could show you the sketch of my drawing at least, but I think that'll wait until tomorrow, since it won't be me uploading it, you'll see what I mean ;)

I am awed by the wonderful drawing of Kossu. The pose, the background, the snowy details...Thank you SO much Kanu!:hugs:

Kossu is the first lion character I ever created so he's very special to me.Don't worry about the colors,I think that they are very fitting with the snowy environment. It's darker so it only makes sense that his colors look different.I don't think you need to change anything. Have a very very wonderful Christmas and rest holiday!:)

KS,I'm truly happy that you like the drawing.I was worried it might look a little...overcrowded.Nice work with your drawing too.Bandit and Razzle look lovely.:D

I'm amazed by the beautiful drawings that everyone has uploaded this far.I can't wait to see the rest!:wow:

I'm so sorry I am late everyone! (Although it is still the December 26 here, and Azerane said we could turn it in by 26th the latest, but I wanted it done by Christmas...) Anyways, I got lionobsession, and I drew Chimalsi!

I hope you enjoy it! Again I am so sorry I am late. I might draw you a little something extra next week, if I have time, just to make up for the fact you had to wait for it.

Merry Christmas lionobsession!

Everyone's art here has been beautiful so far. I'm impressed! :cheese:

And as you can probably tell now, Leor drew me for this art Secret Santa. I have the original sketch, it was sent in the mail. ;) Would you like me to scan it Leor, and show it to everyone in this thread? I have to say, it's an adorable sketch and I love it. :hugs: I totally understand about having computer problems. When you get your laptop fixed, take your time coloring it. I am patient, it will be worth the wait. :D

Ooh I'm SO glad you recieved the original sketch over there in good time  I'll send my laptop to get repaired tomorrow, I'm not sure how long will it take, but it's ok if you would like to scan the sketch and upload it here, of course ^^ In any case, I'll try to have the whole piece finished very soon ;)

Oh and that's a really sweet drawing of Chimalsi, awesome work :)

Ok, so I just got some news regarding my laptop. It wan't a bad contact as I originally thought, it's the screen itself that's damaged, and they told me it needs to be replaced, which needs to be ordered, and it's way more expensive :(
My intention was to have it repaired these days so I can finish the drawing soon, then I would back up my Hard Drive info and get a new laptop. But now I don't want to spend more money on my current one by replacing the screen, I prefer to just get a new laptop -.-

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, I'll see what I can do. In the mean time feel free to post the sketch, Sharifu. At least that one survived :)

Sure thing. I attached your sketch to this post.

I do look forward to seeing the final colored piece, but I understand having problems with laptops, I've had lots of problems with laptops over the years. I'm patient, and I'm sure it will look amazing after you color it. :D

Oh my gosh, I finished it!!

Again, my apologies for taking so absurdly long >< In the end I decided to plug my old laptop to a TV screen and finish it there. It still took me a bit because I'm not used to have people watching me draw, and to get a good degree of privacy to do so is hard here. But at last, I'm done with it.

Despite the shortcomings, I quite enjoyed doing it. I hope you like it ^^

Btw, in the drawing Sharifu is supposed to have landed a snowball directly on Sadiki's face... maybe he had it coming xD but he's preparing to answer it ;)
