It's on Thursday, no clapping allowed. No cheers. No confetti. Just a moment of silence. Be serious. No joke...

I'll be wearing a coquelicot for the week.:ayecapn:

that's alright, you beat me at putting a piccy up, so I will just put up the poem....

In Flanders Fields

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

I decided that I really like this poem, it's a really nice tribute to all those soldiers who fought and died. God bless them all.

EDIT: Forgot to put the author... John McCrae

I also love this war poem, I first heard it in a movie called Memphis Belle, it's a very old war movie and this is a wonderful poem, I especially love the last three lines.

An Irish Airman Foresees His Death

"I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;
My country is Kiltartan Cross,
My countrymen Kiltartan's poor,
No likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier than before.
Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all, brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death."

-- William Butler Yeats

This is a poem I wrote two months ago after reading heaps of war poems because war poems are amazing and I wanted to contribute something for the people who were lost so I wrote this... it's not very good.

Anyway, for lack of a better name I called it "Remember the Lost"

"There just in front lay the many dead
Their bodies deep with a bloody red
No one knew just how they died
But every man had nearly cried

The ground was sealed full of their death
Of men who?d taken their last breath
There?s a road they all walk down
Before in their own blood they drown

The soldiers of this mighty war
Have seen what we have never before
How much do we owe these men?
The ones who never returned again

Why do we seem to look and stare
And only for our lives do care
No one seems to know the truth
About the bravery of these youth

Who fought so hard, who really tried
To keep their country and their pride
Who knows the names of these men past?
Who were freed from war, death classed

Who knows the pieces of these men?
That lay around the fields back then
Are they to be always forgotten?
Left alone to become just rotten

Pictures in our memories
Are not enough for men like these
They fought and died for you and me
A picture of our history

If we do remember them
Compassion from out hearts will stem
Let us not forget the diggers
Pulled down by cold, relenting triggers"

-By Me! :D

In Australia it's called Rememberance Day and it's on the 11th of November, on the 11th minute, of the 11th hour, of the 11th month, we have one minutes silence and we usually have a service at school for it and someone recits the poem "In Flander's Fields" and then someone plays that war rememberance song on a bugle! Well that's what used to happen at my old school anyway! I thought it was nice.

Here in Canada, they call it Remembrance Day, it's on November 11th.;) We also have an assembly at school on that day...:P The assembly usually starts a 1:33PM:p

We had a 2 minute silence in Primark (a department store) where I work today. I feel pretty half-assed though because I never bought a poppy for it, and I only got paid today so I didn't see the point seeing as it's pretty much been and gone *sigh*

I had a minutes silence which was cool, it's nice to think about all those who died, it makes it so what they did means something and their lives wern't just wasted.

Woah, the US and Australia have the same kind of holiday on the same day? Cosmic..

I don't know if I would call it a sad day though, I think it should be a day of pride. It is to me, to be proud of my countrymen who've defended out ideals since it's conception.

My dad's a vietnam vet. I'm just glad he made it out alive, or else I wouldn't be here.. Heheh. :cheese:

Yes, you know... just like Christmas and Easter ;) :p hehe

Both my poppa and my grandpa served in a war, (it's really bad of me that I don't remember which one, cos I think one of them served in the second but the other was something else I dunno, I never really ask about it cos I feel bad and don't wanna make 'em upset or something) my grandpa was a lighthorseman from what I can remember....

Also I know a guy who served in Vietnam, I feel so sorry for him because he's been so badly affected by it, it hasn't left him at all. It's good to hear your dad made it through Pat, couldn't have you not being here. ;)

Hehehe, those are religious holidays though, that's a little different. ;)

And your grandpa served in WWII? That's really cool I think. I wonder if he served in Africa, or maybe even at El Alamein? (Is a bit of a WWII buff at heart, hehe.)

And I'm glad that you're glad that I'm here Becca.

I -think- so yes, though I couldn't tell you any more details, hehe, I personally find the history of wars boring, although for some reason I love war movies like saving private ryan and band of brothers series. I mean, obviously they're kinda completly different but I really have no interest in war... although last time we visited my poppa we found his old army trench coat, it's really cool and he has photos from the war
