I say that you post some easier maths questions STL. The trig question you just posted is only covered in 'Specialist maths' where i come from (another planet :p), and most poeple don't do that. So for the sake of us people with 'average' maths skills, i'd like to see some easier questions!! Some of you seem to be able to tackle these advanced questions, but then no one has an answer yet...

BTW STL why don't you make up your own questions instead of getting them from a book? that would be cooler ;)

Also, we can have mathematical questions that require more thinking than maths skills and calculations.

Son: Daddy, when I grow up, I want to become an inventor!

Father: Oh yeah, an inventor of what?

Son: I wanna invent a machine that speaks! And it says "Who Cares??" to anything boring that it detects! Maybe it can connect to the internet too! Wireless messaging will never be the same again!

Father: Oy! *faints*

*Son feels determined and goes to the scrap yard and asks for supplies*

[Next day: Son returns from school]

Son: Guess what daddy?

Father: What, my son?

Son: I drew a picture of that apparatus I showed you yesterday and let everyone in my class see it for "Show and Tell"!

Father: Oy! *faints yet again*

*Son feels determined and starts working on project*

(Fast forward>>a few weeks)
[Scene: at hospital]
{Enter Son}

Son: I'm here to see you daddy!

Father: Hi son...

Son: How long will you be in here?

Father: ...depends...

Son: ...remember that projec...

*heart monitor stops beeping and buzzes at a steady rate*

Son: Daddy? Oh well. Hey nurse!! How much is it to cryogenically freeze my father until I become rich after an invention...

Well I'm goin' to grade 9 next year but I skipped grade 9 Math and English so I'll have Math 10 and English 10 next year. The Canadian curriculum is pretty simple but still, half of my class is failing all the mandatory subjects (which leaves me and a few other students the teacher's pets :cheese:). Gordon Campbell and Chris Kelly both need whacks on their heads, preferably with some westcoast salmon.

EDIT: Not really, I just think of them now, too bad I can't do that when I'm awake, I can only think of those things half-asleep...:D

 Maybe not that serious! LOL! Well every teacher that I have says that I have a good sense of humour and say that I ask a lot of questions. My humanities teacher is really cool, I mean he's got a good sense of humour too. My French teacher is pretty serious but if you ask him some questions in French, he'd probably be glad to help. My math/science teacher knows less than I do, so that doesn't really help (I think he is just a substitution for someone else that was on vacation or something, he doesn't know a lot about science!) I seem to find a way to make teachers like me, maybe it's a talent? I dunno? But oh well... :hakuna: Matata!

Nope, combined. Grade 10 is seperate though. See, told ya' our school system sucked! I the the ratio of public to private schools are 100:1. At least I couldn't find any in my area. But I'm getting a different teacher next year anyways, and I know that he or she will be way better.

Hmm, well if you say the logarithm question was pretty simple then here is what i ended up with when i took a stab at it:

3^(2+log(x+5))-3 < x

I'm predicting that's totally wrong coz it has x on both sides of the equation, which seems weird to me. heh, never done an equality with logarithms before ;)

ahem. i'm really tired at the moment but i'm working on that question you posted! thankyou, it was exactly the type of question i was after! it's all easy, except for the differentiating the part where it says:

-3x^1.5-2x

I'm hoping i read the question right. if that x in the -3x part was a damn e (eulers number) then i know the answer! but it's not so it's mucking me around a bit. hehe, i'll have a go at it again tommorow, i'm really tired ATM so maybe that's why i can't do it! :p ;)

Nope, fraid not.

are you sure , i did it again, and i got the same answer and when i substitute the numbers back into the equation, it works.....:p :cheese:

because when you put in x=(-4+sqrt(10)) you get the answer of 2. so the numbers have to be less than that. and when you put in any numbers less than -3, there is no answer because you cant take log of 0 or a negative number :p......did that make any sense?

no problem :)

for this one.....is the answer:

5 < x < 6  :cheese:

Unfortunately you might end up getting it whether you ordered it or not :S Assuming that you haven't died, some whiskey and soda will cure the resulting bowel not-so-goodness, apparently. http://img36.photobucket.com/albums/v110/ericblack/Smileys/riiight.jpg http://img36.photobucket.com/albums/v110/ericblack/Smileys/standback.jpg I just heard that from someone last week. If Sally sells seashells by the seashore in proportion to the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow (African, not European), what is the maximum circumference of the wood a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

It's a word problem. Not so sure there's much math involved, but it ... has ... words.

The total volume of Sally's body is 5 cubic meters. If you were to kill Sally, the most effective way to dispose of her body would be to cut it into small pieces. Say that you cut it into 12 pieces, and each piece was progressively 2 times the size of the last smaller piece, what is the size of the smallest piece?

Do woodchucks taste better with salt or garlic?

(Disclaimer: Girls named Sally are starting to get wise. They will break your neck unless some caution is exercised. Furthermore, woodchucks are all tough and gamey. You wouldn't want to eat them.)

Interesting! :cheese:

I think i know a bit about why that happens though  ;)

The green triangle has a steeper gradient than the red one. So all the triangles combined don't create a proper triangle - the hypotenuse has a kink in it in both of those pics! So arranging them differently makes them look the same, but that's only because of the fact there are 4 lines and not three. If it was a real triangle then you couldn't rearrange them and have space left over. =D

I really hope i'm right here :alone:

Hey! I was right about that question! I feel proud :irule:

I couldn't completely understand why the different gradients had that effect though, so thanks for explaining it STL ;)

:hmm: I wonder if there are any maths questions out there that we can stump you on :jejeje:

Have you had any experience with complex numbers? :curious:

I havn't :p, but they seem to be pretty cool, in a bizarre "maths is fun" way :idiot:

You gotta admit that numbers that don't really exist is pretty cool!

I just tries to do #6 and this is what I got (without cheating in any way or using a calculator) (-A90degrees)squared/A(cot+cos). I'm going to see the real answer right now.
