I don't believe there's been a thread about this exact topic yet, if there has been mods feel free to merge.
There are a many great zoos out there around the country and the world, and I'm sure a lot of us have taken some pictures of animals while we were there - I just got back from the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, one of the top-rated zoos in the country, and I took a lot of pictures to share with everyone. If anyone has animal pics from zoos, safaris or from pretty much anywhere, please post in this thread. We'd all love to see them!

LION EXHIBIT

This majestic (but elderly) lion patrols his territory

Right as I took this picture, the couple standing next to me said, "It looks like Simba and Nala on Pride Rock!"

The lion emits his powerful roar... or is that a yawn?
(NEW) JAGUAR EXHIBIT
At 3,850 square feet, Costing $4.3 million dollars and holding 1500 plants, a running stream and a giant kapok tree, it's the largest natural Jaguar exhibit in the country and it currently holds one absolutely beautiful cat!

TIGER EXHIBIT

Can't post more than 10 pics at a time, so more coming in a little bit!

Yay for animal pictures! :D I love when tigers have that little poof thing going on the sides of their faces like that. Can't wait to see more Tim. :) I might post some of the marine variety later ;)

Sorry for the bad humor, but if anyone's ever heard of the expression "pee like a firehose," the elephant's bathroom habits personify that simile.
http://students.washington.edu/tim300/woodland/orangutan.jpg
The other orangutan (a very large male) in this exhibit did a hilarious routine, he was well aware that he was being watched as he kept looking up (this exhibit is viewed from a boardwalk about 20 feet up) and I think he got so fed up with us that he walked clear around to the back of the exhibit, found a burlap bag, covered himself completely with it and went to sleep!
http://students.washington.edu/tim300/woodland/toucan1.jpg
A really pretty toucan, I didn't catch the name of the breed though.
http://students.washington.edu/tim300/woodland/giraffe1.jpg
Straight from the sun-baked grassy plains of Botswana, I mean Seattle, we have a giraffe nibbling on leaves fronted by a small herd of Grant's Gazelle.
http://students.washington.edu/tim300/woodland/zebra.jpg
Plains zebra, all they do is eat! Not a bad life.
And one more shot of that gorgeous jaguar:
http://students.washington.edu/tim300/woodland/jaguar3.jpg
Oh what the heck. While we're at it, how about some movies too?
Tiger Movie (http://students.washington.edu/tim300/woodland/tiger.MOV)

Awesome! :D I love the orangutan picture! And don't you love how people roar at the tiger like it's stupid enough to mistake their wimpy immitations for the real thing? People do that at our zoo too.
Here are some pictures from our zoo. :) The San Antonio Zoo is one of the oldest in the country and was one of the first if not the first to have animal exhibits without bars. :) Our zoo needs updating but it just received a grant and some donations to do so. I can't wait to see what they do with it. :D
These are all links because I'm too lazy right now to resize them to more post-friendly sizes. :p

Mainly Sumatran and Siberian Tigers have that...this is a Sumatran tiger, because of his cinnamon fur and his close, thin stripes, isn't it? :hmm:
(Sorry if it's not, but it sooo looks like one^^)
Anyways, that's a great zoo, LK_300! :cheese:
I don't see any fences at all ^^

yes, males have those more than females... the tigers in Lion_King_300's pictures, the second two, appear to be male ... (as the cheek fur looks more developed) and first two look female...
the tiger in your photo appears as female... (though, I may be wrong... forward shots are easier to tell)

Nah, she's female. ;) She had cubs a few years ago and they were sooooooo cute. :D I think they sent them off to other facilities once they were old enough.

Usually I go there to watch the meerkats, but I also have a look at all the other animals. I like african animals in general, but I could spend hours in front of the meerkats' run. :)

The meerkats are so cute! :D That's my favourite place at Busch Gardens but our zoo doesn't have any :( Maybe when they're done with their renovations. Ooooo fossa! :D We have those too. They have babies a lot which is awesome. :D

My favorite animals to watch at the Stuttgart Zoo are the Snow Leopards, the Meerkats and the Fennecs...
We only have 2 really old lionesses (21 years old) and all they do is sleep <.<
I wish they had some better Big Cat enclosures at that Zoo..

Cool pictures.
I have a few from 4 years ago I think, from the Antwerp zoo.
I remember a pic from a polar bear I made, and when I showed it to my grandma, she asked me: Is that Bart's dog?

Hey all, I went to the Houston Zoo this Saturday... great weather, lots of people/kids/strollers, but also some good pictures!
If you have Facebook, just click one of these (and add me as a friend, jeez :)):

Some choice photos:
Tiger (Asiatic, I think) getting a drink of water. It paced back and forth along the waterline for a good few minutes before breaking pattern. (http://photos-377.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023377_4695.jpg)
Tiger pacing along the water. (http://photos-378.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023378_5014.jpg)
Tiger checking out the scene. (http://photos-388.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023388_8384.jpg)
Jonathan, the new lion at the Houston Zoo. The lionesses tend to stay back and watch him, making it known they don't give their trust away easily. (http://photos-390.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023390_9036.jpg)
Warthog profile. (http://photos-406.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023406_4385.jpg)
My favorite picture I took at the Zoo -- an African breed of cattle called the Ankole. Just look at those horns. (http://photos-407.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023407_4721.jpg)
After many repetitions of his pattern, the ocelot varied his path and came close to the fence. (http://photos-419.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023419_8886.jpg)
Leopard, chilling (http://photos-415.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023415_7482.jpg)
A fossa, only found in Madagascar. This one was born in Cleveland, and is almost three years old. (http://photos-431.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023431_3527.jpg)
Asiatic elephant. (http://photos-437.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023437_4681.jpg)
New baby elephant, Mac - born 384 lbs. and a large 40"x40" -- the largest in an American zoo ever! (everything's bigger in Texas...) (http://photos-446.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023446_7730.jpg)
For comparison, Mac and (possibly) his mother, Shanti. (http://photos-447.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023447_8043.jpg)
Giraffe, checking out his admirers. (http://photos-448.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023448_8364.jpg)
Giraffe, with new son, Kiva! (http://photos-451.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023451_9353.jpg)
Giraffe in motion. (mmm, look at that blue sky) (http://photos-450.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023450_9020.jpg)
Meercat on lookout duty. (http://photos-455.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023455_615.jpg) OK, so funny story about the meercats. They did this "huddle" of a whole group of them, then spontaneously "broke" and took up stations.
Komodo Dragon. (http://photos-458.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023458_1681.jpg)
Blanco, the Zoo's white alligator, on of only 14 in existence (has a condition which is essentially a "white spot" covering its entire body) (bad indoor pic). (http://photos-463.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023463_3429.jpg)
A Giant Eland (Africa) -- this might be the one that was born recently (a first for the Zoo). (http://photos-468.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023468_4956.jpg)
Nyala antelope, with what I think are two young offspring. (http://photos-469.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023469_5272.jpg)
The Great Argus - a pheasant with a "tail" about 2 feet long! (http://photos-485.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023485_311.jpg)
Bali mynah -- awesome blue region around its eyes. (http://photos-484.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023484_9996.jpg)
Awesomely-colored unknown type of parrot. (http://photos-492.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023492_2553.jpg)
Rhinoceros Hornbill. (http://photos-479.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v64/122/115/1162200061/n1162200061_30023479_8408.jpg)
I also saw tapirs, alligators, crocodiles, turtles, lizards, iguanas, ducks, flamingoes, a couple of other birds (including a bald eagle), otters, giant anteates, maned wolves, margays, panthers, jaguars, and spectacled bears.
And as a bonus, here's a video of sea lions. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IS1ToJMiWE)

Yay! The zoo! :D I loved the Houston zoo. That parrot does have some beautiful plumage. And yay! sea lions. I loved it when she came up and was like "Hello?" and then went right back to swimming. Do they have seals too? I can't remember.

Seals? No, at least not now... I didn't go into the aquarium part, but I suspect it's mostly fish in there.

Probably. It's been a long time since I've been there. I'd love to go back sometime. I remember standing and watching the lions for a good half hour before I realized my family had just kind of left me.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention one of the most hilarious things about the whole day (besides the parents pretending to know about animals and misinforming their kids about them):
One kid was looking at, I think the margay, and asked his parents, "What is that, a Hakuna Matata?"
HasiraKali
March 18th, 2007, 08:28 AM
 Nice. The whole parents not reading signs and telling their kids falsehoods about the animals really annoys me. I think it's mostly because it's my job to educate people about animals at work and when I can't do it when I'm not working, I get annoyed. I'll correct people though. Got into an argument with some guy about Okapi once. He insisted they were a giraffe-zebra-donkey hybrid.

This is Hadiah, a cute tiger cub that was abandoned by its mother and raised by zookeepers. It's really an amazing story - and I had the pleasure of covering it for one of the local community newspapers, and it was special because it was my first news story that appeared in print.

We'll do the Jaguar first... he's seven years old and weighs about 180 pounds. He's been at Woodland Park since 2003 and the keeper said there are plans to have him mate with a female jaguar soon which will be on loan from another zoo.

This is Jake, who just celebrated his 16th birthday June 4th, 2007. He's getting old and losing a little weight but the zookeepers are doing what they can to fatten him up.
http://students.washington.edu/tim300/wpz/lea_lion_sleep.JPG
Jake out cold... it was an unusually hot day for springtime in Seattle, around 80 degrees.

No yawning in class!

The only female lioness at the zoo, she is also fairly old at 14 or 15 I believe, but still in perfect health.

Out of the 15 or so times I've been to the zoo this is the FIRST TIME that any of the lions have come right up to the window of the viewing shelter! What a treat to be literally inches away from this beautiful animal. :)

IMO the best picture I've ever taken in terms of overall composition. She had walked away from the viewing shelter and I was just about to leave and she started walking back directly towards me... and I got the perfect shot. I called this one "The Stalking Huntress."

That last one is awesome Tim! =D It looks like something out of Nat Geo. Great job.
Last time we went to the zoo, one of the young male lions was just staring at me. He watched me walk up and down the fence. It was awesome.

This thread is one of my faves. :) Seriously. I just wanted to show off some of mine from my last trip. :) These are from that trip I was talking about up there where the lion was watching me walk up and down the fence. :)
This is a yellow-backed duiker. There are a few zoos that have them, but they're really shy. This is the best shot I've ever had of one. They also eat carrion. Which is different.

The zoo just added a new set of exhibits with insects. It's pretty awesome really. My sister is deathly afraid of roaches... so I took this... I'm going to put it as her desktop one day.

More photos. :D
Orinoco Crocodile. This is super cool. This is one of the most endangered/rare species of crocodilan. According to ISIS, there are only 13 in zoos around the world. It's so awesome.

Baby dwarf caiman. These little dudes are over a year old, and still barely a foot long. Reptiles grow so slowly.

This is the lion that was watching me walk along the fence. We've got two young males and they're going to be so handsome once they're grown.

Broken
January 7th, 2008, 07:42 PM
A few clinics right after my discharge for my transplant (about three weeks) My parents took me to Pittsburg zoo on the way home. No one was at the lion exibit, and none of the animals there were awake, I was feeling really sore and tired and had to sit down for a rest. Of course I sat right in front of the window, and while I was resting the male lion there padded down to the water by the window. He just stood there and we looked at each other, locking eyes he looked so wise, like he understood me. We stayed like this for a long moment before he turned and strolled back up the hill, right at the same time as other visitors ran to see him.
I kinda felt like he gave me a special viewing, and it was really intense.
I thought it would be a cool story to share with you all.
I hope to be going back to the zoo this March after clinic, maybe I'll get some good pics.

Forgive me for the boarders on the images, ive taken them straight off my Deviant Art account, as im at Danis place in the UK... miles away from my PC :D
Broken... thats really awesome... and aweful nice of the lion *chuckles* i think thats what i dislike about zoos.. is just how many people there are... and they just look take a photo and move on. Its like a check list for them... they don't enjoy it or realise how lucky they are to see animals like these... so close up

Great shot of the lions! I imagine that's pretty rare to have 2 males in the same enclosure. And I love the emu too, he's truly at home down at your zoo...
Hope you'll post more!

Komodos are very very awesome! Nice close up there :D
@ Lunarcat thanks ^^ *hugs* Yeah im love with my camera... but what i wouldn't do for Lion King 300's camera *drools* :cheese:
@ Lion King 300 Yeah it is rare, i haven't seen it anywhere else. Though the during feeding time they have to separate them. I think the son will be shipped out sooner or later to Taronga's other zoo, along with the daughter as shes probably reaching maturity.
Emu almost pecked my eyes out... hehee, but hes a real cute one! Ill post more eventually!
Thanks for the positive feedback :)

StE: Wow, all those photos look awesome. I really like the close-up you did of the lions and the tiger, the emu doesn't look too bad either. The detail you see on them is just amazing. ^^
I wanted to get a camera similar to yours with my Christmas money, but they we all topping 400 quid. x_x They look as though they can take some pretty awesome shots though. I'll add you to DA so I can see some more of your awesome stuff. :D Keep up the great work.
HK: Nice close-up of the baby Komodo, awesome presentation and composition there. :)

Very cool pics everyone.
We have a Persian Leopard at the zoo in Adelaide, though the enclosure isn't very photography friendly, nor is the leopard. What I wouldn't give to get a decent shot of that guy though, because he's absolutely gorgeous.

No problem, and thanks for adding me back. :D
The nearest zoo to me is like 60 miles away (unless you can count Flamingo Land as one, which is like 40 something miles away) so my visits to zoos are pretty much limited. These are nowhere near as good as some of you guys photos, but here are some photos I taken at various zoos. Twycross zoo near Birmingham and Fuengirola zoo in Spain.
